摘要：
In Soviet central Asia, excessive water diversions for irrigation have shrunk the Aral Sea by 60 percent and turned much of the surrounding basin into a wasteland of salt bogs and desert. This imprudent agricultural development, whose impacts were predicted by Soviet scientists 15 years ago to be insignificant, has wreaked severe social, economic, and ecological damages on the region.
