Medical interpreting for victims of gender-based violence

Although some research projects worldwide have already dealt with interpreting and gender-based violence, there remains a need to address this topic in greater depth in medical interpreting. The aim of this article is to explore the characteristics of medical conversations in contexts of gender-based violence, which prove to be particularly challenging for interpreters due to their specific features: specialized vocabulary, the use of metaphors, emotional content and cultural differences. A small number of conversations with foreign victims of gender-based violence is analysed following a case study methodology.
