摘要
The paper studies the changes in the world language space in modern times. It focuses on the tendencies of the development of the role of different languages. English is still "lingua franca" of the globalized world, but more languages acquire more importance following the changes in political, economical and cultural spheres. Russian language has always been the language in intercultural communication because of the multicultural character of Russia. Recently it has lost some of its popularity after the collapse of Soviet Union, but now it is becoming more popular again in the sphere of international education not only in the former republics of USSR, but also in Europe, Asia and America. The author concludes that teaching Russian language should be accompanied by learning culture and Russian communicative styles and result in developing intercultural competence.
