摘要
This essay explores the evolution of a specific American family farm in rural Iowa, from 1853 through present. It describes macrolevel economic, structural, and political events during this period and their microlevel effects on the Kardel family farm. Historical sources and interviews with family farm members are used to trace how this working, multigenerational family farm navigated and adapted to national and international events affecting Midwestern U.S. family farming. In so doing, it sheds light on wider trends in agricultural evolution and on factors influencing the prospects for continued survival of U.S. family farming.
