INTERMEDIATE STORAGE FOR NONCONTINUOUS PROCESS VARIABILITY AND FAILURES

摘要
Intermediate storage is frequently installed at strategic locations in a noncontinuous chemical process to eliminate short term fluctuations in the material flow between adjacent processing stages. In this paper, we apply our previously developed stochastic model to obtain analytical expressions for the storage size required to mitigate the effects of random parameter variations, batch failures and equipment failures/repairs in the two-stage process with nonidentical, parallel batch/semicontinuous units. Numerical evaluation on several simulated problems indicates that the theoretical storage size estimates are within 16% of the predictions obtained from extensive Monte Carlo simulations.
